    09 - THE EFFECT OF THE BED RISE VELOCITY ON THE SEDIMENTATION PROCESS IN HOPPER DREDGES (807)

In the last decennia there has been a strong development in the enlargement of TSHD’s (Trailing Suction Hopper Dredges) from roughly 10.000 m3 in the early 90’s up to 50.000 m3 expected loading capacity in 2010. Because of the economy of the loading process, but also environmental regulations, it is important to predict the overflow losses that are occurring. Van Rhee (2002C) developed a sophisticated model, but this model is not easy to reproduce. The strong point of the Miedema & Vlasblom (1996) model is the simplicity, giving a transparent model where cause and result are easily related. The Miedema & Vlasblom model has been extended with a number of features that do not really influence the simplicity of the model as published in Terra et Aqua (Miedema (2008)).

Some issues have not yet been discussed in the previous publications. The first one is the influence of the so called bed rise velocity on the hopper load parameter. The hopper load parameter determines which grain fraction will settle for 100% and which grain fraction will settle partially. The hopper load parameter however does not take into account the rise of the bed during the period the particle has to travel from the inlet to the overflow. Taking this into account results in a modified hopper load parameter, of which the derivation and the implications will be shown. This model has been verified with test data and matches the test data closely.
